In his seminal book The Grammar of Ornament, architect Owen Joneslaid out his design theories for decorative art and included examples like this specimen of painted lacquer work from the collection at the India House. As well as showcasing patterns from different cultures, one chapter of the book was dedicated to the use of nature motifs - something which is common to designs all around the world.
